The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible full-time employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave during a 12-month period. Employees who take approved FMLA leave will continue to receive group health insurance benefits under the same terms and conditions as if they had remained actively employed.
FMLA is intended to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by providing protected leave for qualifying family and medical situations while also recognizing the operational needs of employers. The law promotes equal employment opportunities for all employees.
Eligibility
To be eligible for FMLA leave, an employee must:
Have been employed by the District for at least one calendar year.
Have worked at least 1,250 hours during the previous 12 months.
Qualifying Reasons for FMLA
FMLA applies to public agencies, public and private elementary and secondary schools, and employers with 50 or more employees. Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the following qualifying reasons:
The birth of a child and to care for the newborn.
The placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care.
To care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition.
The employee's own serious health condition that prevents them from performing the essential functions of their job.
A qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that your family member is on covered active duty or has been notified of an impending call or order to covered active duty status.
To care for your family member who is a covered service member with a serious injury or illness.
Employees requesting FMLA leave or seeking additional information should e-mail Kristi Baublitz and Aislinn King in the Human Resources Department. All required FMLA paperwork and supporting documentation must be completed through Human Resources before leave can be approved.
